Carl August Zehnder war 1979 - 2003 ordentlicher Professor für Informatik, mit Arbeitsschwerpunkten in Datenbanken, Entwicklung und Einsatz grosser Informationssysteme, Informationsmanagement, Führung von Informatikprojekten, Informatikausbildung und Informatikrecht. Emeritiert Ende März 2003.
Er ist Bürger von Baden und Birmenstorf AG, geboren am 5. Oktober 1937 und aufgewachsen in Baden; 1957 Maturität in Aarau (Typus A). Er studierte Mathematik an der ETH Zürich (erstes Programmieren an der ERMETH 1958, dipl. Math. 1962, Dr.sc.math. 1965 bei den Professoren E. Stiefel und H. Künzi, mit einer Dissertation über die Computerberechnung von Stunden- und Fahrplänen), darauf ab 1965 Industrieberatung und 1966–1967 Forschungsaufenthalt am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
1967 kehrte er an die ETH Zürich zurück, zuerst als stellvertretender Leiter ins neu gegründete Institut für Operations Research (Professor F. Weinberg), dann in den wachsenden Informatikbereich (19691973 Leiter Koordinationsgruppe für Datenverarbeitung, 1970 Assistenzprofessor für Computerwissenschaften, 1973 a.o., 1979 o. Professor für Informatik), wo er das Forschungsgebiet Datenbanken aufbaute. Parallel zur Tätigkeit in Lehre und Forschung kamen immer wieder Zusatzaufgaben für die ETH Zürich (19731977 Delegierter des Rektors für Studienorganisation, 19811982 Gründungsvorstand der neuen Abt. für Informatik IIIC, 19871990 Vizepräsident der ETH Zürich für den Bereich Dienste, 19911997 Vorsteher Dep. Informatik), aber auch beim Informatikeinsatz in der Armee (seit 1963) und als langjähriger Präsident von Informatik-Fachverbänden (SVI/FSI, seit 2004 ICTswitzerland - Schweiz. Verband der Informatikorganisationen / Fédération suisse des organisations d'informatique, und SARIT - seit 2012 SIRA - Swiss Informatics Research Association)
Carl August Zehnder has been full Professor of Computer Science 1979 2003, focusing on databases, development and application of large information systems, information management, project management in information technology (IT), IT education and IT law. Emeritus since March 2003.
Prof. Zehnder is born in Baden, Switzerland, on 5 October 1937, went to school in Baden and Aarau and entered ETH Zürich 1957 to study mathematics. Already in 1958, he followed a programming course for the ETH-built early computer ERMETH. In 1962 he graduated in mathematics (dipl.Math.), and in 1965 he earned his doctoral degree (Dr. sc. math.), both from ETH Zurich. His doctoral thesis concerned computer based calculations of timetables and transportation schedules under the advise of professors E.Stiefel and H.Künzi. Thereafter he did industry consulting, and 1966-1967 he worked as a postdoc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
In 1967 he returned to ETH Zurich, initially as deputy head of the newly-founded Institute of Operations Research (Professor F. Weinberg), then in the rapidly expanding field of information technology as head of the coordination group for data processing (1969-1973), assistant professor (1970), associate professor (1973), and full professor (1979) of Computer Science, where he introduced databases as a new research and teaching field. In parallel with his teaching and research activities, Prof. Zehnder engaged in additional responsibilities for ETH Zurich including Rector's delegate for study organization (1973-1977), founding head of the new Division of Computer Science IIIC (1981-1982), ETH vice-president (1987-1990), and head of the Department of Computer Science (1991-1997). He has also been engaged in introducing IT to the Swiss army (since 1963) and as longtime president in professional organizations for IT/ computer science (SVI/FSI, since 2004 ICTswitzerland - Schweiz.
