Short Curriculum Vitae

Update: I received my Ph.D. in August 2011 and now moved as the CTO of a company I co-founded called Evrythng. Where we are working on providing active digital identities for all kinds of products and devices. My research activities continue through the Web of Things blog.

I am PhD candidate at ETH Zurich at the Institute for Pervasive Computing, a Research Associate for SAP Research Zurich and a member of the Auto-ID labs. I was formerly as a researcher at the Information Management group of ETH working on business mobile interactions with the Internet of Things for Nokia Research. Before this, I was a scientific collaborator of the Software Engineering group of the University of Fribourg where I worked on scalable software architectures for RFID together with SUN Microsystems Switzerland.
I received my MSc in Computer Science and a BSc in Computer Science and Management from the Universities of Fribourg and Bern. My master thesis was done at the Ubicomp lab of Lancaster University (UK) with Prof. Hans Gellersen, where I worked on using sensor networks to support mobile spontaneous interactions with the physical world.

My research interest is in:

  • Web-inspired and lightweight architectures for a global Web of Things (smart objects, sensor networks and machines).
  • Composition and mashups of services within this Web of Things.
  • Use of semantic technolgies for searching services in the physical world.
and since that's plenty of work, I am always looking for motivated students interesting in writing a thesis or a lab project!

We are currently testing the use of semantics (Microformat) to describe smart objects in the Web of Things, the following is a a link to some of our test files. It is more meant for robots and crawlers but feel free to browse it. Smart objects at ETH, CNB VS Lab.
