I am a professor at the Department of Computer Science (D-INFK) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), Switzerland.

I was born in Madrid, Spain. I have an engineering degree in telecommunications -electrical engineering- from the Madrid Technical University (ETSIT, Politecnica de Madrid, 1989). As a Fulbright scholar, I completed an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science at UC Santa Barbara (1992 and 1994). After graduating from Santa Barbara, I worked at the IBM Almaden Research Center. I joined ETH Zurich at the end of 1995 as a senior researcher in the database group. I became assistant professor at ETH Zurich in 1998 and was appointed full professor in 2001. I have received several awards for my research and technical contributions, the most recent ones include the AOSD 2012 Most Influential Paper Award for work on dynamic aspect oriented programming, the VLDB 2010 Ten Year Best Paper Award for work on database replication, and the 2009 ICDCS Best Paper Award for work on Remote Direct Memory Access. I have been PC-Chair or co-Chair of a number of conferences in several areas, among others: Middleware (2004), VLDB Infrastructure Track (2006), ICDE (2008), Business Process Management  (2007), and the VLDB Experimental and Analisys Track (2012). At ETHZ, I am currently part of the Systems Group and the Enterprise Computing Center. I am a member of the ACM and IEEE Societies.

My research interests encompass almost all aspects of systems, from design to run time. I work in distributed systems, databases, middleware, and system aspects of software engineering. In all cases, in projects aiming at building complete systems that allow us to explore and find out the possibilities as well as the limits of new technologies. Most of my research these days is related to multi-core architectures, large clusters, FPGAs, and cloud computing, where we are working towards adapting traditional system software (OS, database, middleware) to these new hardware platforms.
