SHORT CV

I am a full professor at the Department of Computer Science (D-INFK) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ).

I am originally from Madrid, Spain. I have an engineering degree in telecommunications -similar to electrical engineering- from the Madrid Technical University in Spain (1989). As a Fulbright scholar, I completed an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science at UC Santa Barbara (1992 and 1994). After graduating from Santa Barbara, I was a visiting researcher at the IBM Almaden Research Center. I joined ETH Zurich towards the end of 1995 as a senior researcher in the database group. I was appointed assistant professor in 1998 and full professor in 2001. In 2004-2005 I spent a sabbatical at UC Berkeley as a Stonebraker Fellow. At ETHZ, I am currently the Head of the Institute of Pervasive Computing, one of the five Institutes in the Department of Computer Science. I am a member of the ACM and IEEE Societies.
