Systems Group includes several several research groups (Prof. Gustavo Alonso, Prof. Donald Kossmann, Prof. Timothy Roscoe, and Prof. Nesime Tatbul) within the Institute for Pervasive Computing and the Institute of Information Systems.
These research groups invite applications for the following positions:

Open positions in the Systems Group

The Systems Group is actively recruiting highly-qualified PhD students and Senior and Postdoctoral researchers interested in pursuing research in one or more of the following areas:

• Databases and data management
• Operating system kernel design and implementation
• Network architecture and wide-area distributed systems
• XML processing
• Data stream processing
• Mobile computing and embedded devices
• Distributed and information systems in general.

The principal language of the group is English.

PhD positions

Prospective PhD students should ideally:

• Have good coding skills in multiple systems languages such as C, C++, OCaml, Java, Haskell, etc.
• Be experienced in toolbuilding and configuration using scripting languages like Python or Ruby
• Have a strong desire to apply computer science ideas to building real systems
• Enjoy working collaboratively in a group

Qualified candidates should send an application with the following attachments (as PDF or text attachments, not zipped):

• Short research mission statement.
• At least two letters of reference.

To be accepted by the ETH administration, PhD students must have a master's degree or equivalent from a reputed institution. Please note that there is very little flexibility regarding this requirement; candidates with a bachelor's degree are encouraged to look into our department's pre-doctoral program, which provides the opportunity of a fast-track research master's as a preparation for the doctoral program (see the pre-doc program page).

Postdoctoral and Senior Researcher positions

Postdoctoral or Senior Researcher candidates should ideally:

• Have good coding skills in multiple systems languages such as C, C++, OCaml, Java, Haskell, etc.
• Be experienced in toolbuilding and configuration using scripting languages like Python or Ruby
• Have a strong desire to apply computer science ideas to building real systems
• Enjoy working collaboratively in a group
• Have experience building and deploying "real" systems software, for example an OS kernel or DBMS, or a distributed system deployed commercially or on a research platform such as PlanetLab
• Possess good writing skills in English
• A publication record in top academic conferences, workshops, and journals.
