For each successfully passed course and assessment, credit points (KP) are awarded according to the European European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). One credit corresponds to the workload of 30 hours. The credit points depend on the weekly number of hours of a course. Detailled information on this can be found in the Study Guide.
For the Bachelor's degree at least 180 KP must be acquired in the predefined course categories. For the Master's degree 90 KP must be acquired (sum of courses (60 KP) and from Master thesis (30 KP)).
Any kind of evaluation of the student's achievement is generally called "assessment". At ETH the most common form of assessment consists of written and oral exams. General information on assessments can be found on the website of the rectorate. The assessments of individual course categories of the Bachelor studies are described in the Study Guide. Information on assessments of the specific lectures can be found in the course catalog.
Assessments are usually rated according to the Swiss scale of grades from 1 to 6, where 6 is the best grade and 1 is the worst grade. A course is passed with a grade of 4 or higher. Note that the full amount of credit points is awarded, if a course is passed (independently of exact grade). More rarely an assessment is simply rated as "passed" / "not passed".
