Leistungskontrolle

General

Our master program comprises courses in different categories. The corresponding credit points can only be awarded at the completion of each prescribed assessment.

Depending on the individual curriculum component, various assessment types are designed to assess the students‘ knowledge and skills; e.g. oral or written examinations, essays and other written papers, talks/presentations, confirmation of active-in class participation, or evidence of work performed during self-study. Examination results are given graded marks, while other assessments may be graded as pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Every assessment failed can be repeated once.

The grading scale ranges from 6.0 (highest grade) to 1.0 (lowest grade), with 4.0 being the passing grade. The full number of credit points is awarded for a grade 4.0 or higher.

Assessments can take place either at the end of the semester, or during the two official examination periods in February/March, resp. September/October.

The guidelines for conducting performance assessments at ETH are laid out in the document General Rules on Performance Assessment at ETH Zurich.

The assessment type for each individual course can be taken from the on-line Course List.

Assessment of the Foundations of Computer Science courses

For all five Foundations of Computer Science courses, a written exam will be offered during or at the end of each semester, i.e. twice yearly. The grading method is pass/fail.

Assessment of Focus, Elective and Multidiscipline courses

Assessments are carried out once a year only, either at the end of the semester in which the course was given, or in the examination session, following that semester. Hence a repetition of an assessment is only possible, if the course is revisited the following year
